Criminal Defense
Steve Elzie represents clients in criminal matters, both by appointment and by private retainer.
Steve performed work related to criminal defense as far back as law school, where he externed for the Honorable Michael E. Pastor of the Los Angeles Superior Court. Judge Pastor’s courtroom saw a wide variety of high-profile litigation, including the trial of Conrad Murray for the death of Michael Jackson. Steve worked on major cases including police misconduct and gang murder trials.
While at USC Law, Steve received the #1 grade in his first year criminal law course- a highly competitive class graded against roughly 70 other students at the top-20 ranked school. Steve also won a statewide writing contest on the topic of criminal law, being published in California’s Criminal Law Journal regarding the legality of police tracking of GPS and other electronic data.
At Disability Rights Oregon, Steve was responsible for the transition of an entire defense program from the Metropolitan Public Defender of Multnomah County. Steve was in court arguing civil commitment hearings multiple times per week, often advising clients of issues related to concurrent criminal cases.
